Dancing on the Fringe 2022

A Celebration of Dance
March 24 - 26, 2022

This 3-day dance celebration, hosted by Downtown Art Center and presented by Oahu Fringe Festival, was an eclectic collection of dance styles from around the world.

SCHEDULE

THURSDAY, MARCH 24

6PM: SCREENDANCE
In the DAC Performance Space

Movement-based media dance artists share their choreographic inspirations and creative expression through dance in these short films, made in Hawaii during the pandemic.

7PM: Body Portal Theatre Workshop & Dance Media Screening
In the DAC Main Exhibition Space

This session is a workshop with SheenRu Yong of Body Portal Theatre, with a focus on storytelling, improvisation, and partner work, using personal interactions and conversations (no dance experience necessary). It will conclude with the screening of FAIRYTALE:20/20, a film produced for the Edinburgh Fringe last summer.

8PM: Elizabeth Lentz-Hill's 'A Radical Act of Breath'
In the DAC Main Exhibition Space

Independent dancer Elizabeth Lentz-Hill's new dance theatre work, "A Radical Act of Breath," reflects on the status of breath in today's world. The piece uses humor, dance, and text to explore the rise & exhale of daily life.

 

FRIDAY, MARCH 25

6PM: SCREENDANCE

7PM: Piko Dance Arts Collaborative Installation
In the DAC Main Exhibition Space

Piko Dance Arts presents a special dance installation called “The Guerilla Ball,” featuring Giinko Marischino, Jhalak Dance Company, and StRaNgE FrUiT XPrEsS.

8PM: Mareva Minerbi and Madelyn Biven + electroViolet
In the DAC Main Exhibition Space

First show: Duo Madelyn Biven and Mareva Minerbi performs a piece called “first sleep,” accompanied by T.J. Keanu Tario on piano keyboard.

Second show: electroViolet, with Artistic Director Peiling Kao, performs a piece called "body electric 6.1."

9PM: Convergence Dance Theatre
In the DAC Main Exhibition Space

Honolulu co-operative contemporary dance ensemble Convergence Dance Theatre performs a piece titled "In Dreams."

SATURDAY, MARCH 26

5PM: SCREENDANCE

6PM: Divino Ritmo Ballroom Dance
In the DAC Main Exhibition Space

Divino Ritmo Dance will be performing a series of fun, themed ballroom dance pieces, called "A Night at the Movies."

7PM: Sewa Faré West African Dance & Drum Group
In the DAC Main Exhibition Space

Sewa Faré West African Dance & Drum Group gathers its members for a special appearance. The name of the group translates to "joyful celebration," and that's what it will be!

8PM: Shakti Dance Movement + Lilikoi Dance
In the DAC Main Exhibition Space

Belly dance troupes Shakti Dance Movement and Lilikoi Dance each put on a high-energy performance in this two-part show.

9PM: Beyond Bollywood Performance and Workshop
In the DAC Main Exhibition Space

UH Manoa instructor Sai Bhatawadekar leads a troupe of UH Manoa bollywood dancers in a show and workshop that will include a number of elements central to bollywood: RRegh - solo or duet - slow movement; Garba - circular energetic folk dance to recorded and live drums; and Marathi, or devotional folk-inspired dance to film music.
